Sorol Art Museum, Dr. Sukmo Kim as it’s director, is set to inaugurate on February 14th, 2024 as a new public art museum. Sorol Art Museum derives its name from the area’s old historical name, “Sorol,” which means “a village with many pine trees” in Korean.

Sorol Art Museum is designed by the Meier Partners showcasing the architectural design and philosophy of the modern master architect, Richard Meier. Recognized by his distinctively white buildings that generously incorporate natural light, Richard Meier has previously designed world-renowned art museums such as the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (built in 1983), the Museum for Applied Art in Frankfurt (1985), the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona (1995), and the Getty Center in Los Angeles (1997).

Sorol Art Museum is anticipated to become a platform for aesthetic discourse by connecting Korean art with global art. Sorol Art Museum showcases the works of Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), a master of contemporary art. This solo show, the major presentation of Lucio Fontana’s works in South Korea, focus on the artist’s spatial research, a pivotal part of his artistic investigations. In this context, together with a selected and highly significant group of works, six spatial installations (denominated Spatial Environments / Ambienti spaziali) are presented for the first time in Asia.
